Marea Granate – Maroon Wave

The Maroon Wave of Emigrants

pasaporte

It is a project which aims to create a network of international assemblies with the ability to coordinate joint actions simultaneously without waiting for the call to come from Spain as usual. The colour chosen for the Migrants Wave is Maroon, the colour of our passport, a symbol of emigration.

This is a new opportunity to recharge batteries for existing assemblies and at the same time to reach those who have recently migrated regardless of whether they were already part of a citizens’ assembly, involved in any activist circles or not, who do not want leaving their country being synonymous with losing their voice in its social and political life.

There are many migration-related experiences that we all have in common and many things that we can demand our government while we are away. Moreover, the experience some of us emigrants already have will be valuable to create solidarity networks that contribute to better address the forced migration to which increasingly more and more people of all backgrounds and ages are being doomed.

The idea of the Maroon Wave is not to replace existing assemblies in different countries but make them more visible and create new ones. Once this idea has been grasped, treated and discussed by other assemblies, we can decide how to articulate it and in what direction.
Sometimes a small action makes it to many people and contributes to the change we seek. Since its inception last May 16 in London, the Maroon Wave has performed multiple actions worldwide. A summary of all past, present and future events can be found on this map.

June 1, coinciding with the international outcry against the Troika, the Maroon Wave has called simultaneous camping in symbolic places of several cities. Parallel to the camps other protests are announced in cities like Brussels, Dublin, Frankfurt, Montevideo, Paris, Rio de Janeiro and Vienna.

In Vienna we met in front of the memorial to Marcus Ofuma, a central quite busy location. We started with a multiple choice quiz with fun and at the same illustrative prizes. Then we sang a Viennese popular song “Oh du lieber Augustin” with its text adapted to the current situation and then there was an assembly.

After concluding the assembly, we agreed to convene a new meeting, whose date will be agreed by email including all new addresses listed during the assembly. We also agreed to go together to support the Turkish demonstration planned at 18:00 from Karlsplatz to Stadtpark in support of the protests against the brutal police intervention in Istanbul. The social struggle in Turkey is very similar to what is happening in other southern European countries.
